Job Summary
Lead and enhance governance and assurance frameworks at ABSA. Act as the first line of defense by establishing standards, managing risk, and ensuring compliance with legal and operational controls. This role supports risk mitigation across critical processes and works closely with second and third lines of defense.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Governance and Controls (60%)
- Develop, monitor, and enforce internal governance frameworks.
- Oversee model risk lifecycle, regulatory compliance, audits, and data protection controls.
- Manage risks related to key bank operations: transactions, fraud, customer onboarding, and more.
- Perform control testing (RCSA, CPAs), and ensure prompt corrective action on risk events.
- Lead risk-related planning and ensure the business adheres to risk policies and standards.
2. Stakeholder Engagement (20%)
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including risk committees and regulatory bodies.
- Attend governance forums and ensure risk trends are identified and addressed.
- Oversee reconciliation processes and ensure compliance with business rules.
3. Staff & Team Management (10%)
- Lead performance reviews, coaching, and development of governance and assurance team.
- Oversee workflow, ensure resource allocation, and manage succession planning.
4. Personal Development (10%)
- Keep up with evolving governance and risk frameworks.
- Build soft skills and participate in industry developments.
Requirements:
Education:
- Bachelor's in Risk Management, Statistics, Mathematics, or related field (Master’s is an advantage)
Experience:
- 4+ years in governance, risk, audit, or banking
- Familiarity with model risk, assurance, and operational controls
- Experience working across risk types and engaging senior stakeholders
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong analytical, planning, and communication skills
- Knowledge of risk frameworks (e.g. EMRF, IRM, Financial Crime Framework)
- High proficiency in MS Office, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Project
- Ability to identify risks and implement practical solutions
