National Ombuds – Tanzania and Zanzibar


ABOUT EMPLOYER:
SOS Children’s Villages Tanzania is a recognized non-governmental organization affiliated with SOS Children’s Villages International. Operating in Tanzania since 1991, the organization supports children who have lost or are at risk of losing parental care through programs in Zanzibar, Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, and Iringa. SOS Children’s Villages upholds values such as courage, commitment, trust, and accountability. The Ombuds Office is an independent body that complements the organization’s safeguarding systems, ensuring children and youth receive unbiased support in resolving concerns.


RESPONSIBILITY:
The National Ombuds will serve as an independent, neutral party supporting children and youth across SOS programs in Tanzania and Zanzibar. Key duties include:

  • Promoting awareness and prevention of safeguarding issues.
  • Encouraging child participation and safety.
  • Listening and guiding children and young people to resolve their concerns locally.
  • Maintaining confidentiality, independence, impartiality, and informality.
  • Providing feedback, identifying systemic issues, and making recommendations.
  • Collaborating with regional Ombuds and reporting independently from SOS operations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in child protection, social work, child rights, psychology, law, or related fields.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in areas such as child safeguarding, mediation, or youth support.
  • At least 3 years of experience directly working with children and youth.
  • Strong knowledge of children’s rights and protection frameworks.
  • Excellent listening, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Experience in facilitating training and building trust with marginalized groups.
  • Familiarity with Tanzanian and Zanzibari legal and cultural contexts.
  • Swahili fluency and basic English required.
  • Legal right to work in both Tanzania and Zanzibar.
  • Prior NGO experience is an added advantage.

Note: Current or former SOS Children’s Villages employees (within the last 2 years) or relatives of employees are not eligible for this role.


LOCATION:
Dar es Salaam, with national responsibility across Tanzania and Zanzibar.
